The actress and director best known for her role as Paige Matthews in witch drama Charmed is allegedly pictured performing a sex act in screenshots from the video released on social media.
The Sun reports that images from the tape have been circulating on social media.
The newspaper claims there are two videos showing a woman, claimed to be McGowan, performing sex acts.
The leak, which is the latest in a long line of privacy breaches for celebrities, has not yet been commented on by McGowan.
Her reps have not returned calls.
Campaigner McGowan has become notable of late for taking on sexism in Hollywood and has spoke movingly about bodyshaming.
In a recent Instagram post, McGowan took on the photosharing app for its double standards by posting a picture of herself in a skin-tight top.
Alongside the picture, she wrote: “Yes, I have breasts.
“There is no shame in having breasts. Fun fact: Just because a woman posts a photo with her breasts in them does not make a photo that is sexual in nature,” in a seeming dig at the site’s new rules.
The actress also recently bravely spoke out about sexual assault in Hollywood, revealing she was a rape survivor.
In an impassioned social media post, the actress wrote: “A (female) criminal attorney said because I’d done a sex scene in a film I would never win against the studio head.
“Because it’s been an open secret in Hollywood/Media & they shamed me while adulating my rapist #WhyWomenDontReport.”
