Republican debate: Live updates

Welcome to the CNN live blog, where we're bringing you all the best moments from the Fox News Republican debate and Donald Trump's event.

Your host for the evening is CNN Politics reporter Tal Kopan, who's bringing you insights from the whole CNN political team, both in Des Moines, Iowa, and Washington, D.C.

We're also tracking Trump, who is boycotting the GOP debate, as he holds an event to benefit veterans at the same time as the Republican face-off.

As you're following along with the candidates on stage, use #GOPDebate to engage with all the action on social media.

The moderator asked Sen. Rand Paul if he regrets not backing his father, Ron Paul, politically. Sen. Ted Cruz really wanted to get his point across. With. His. Hands. Ben Carson said the world is a crazy place. Sen. Marco Rubio couldn't help but laugh at his own joke about not leaving the stage, a response to Cruz.

Behind-the-scenes in the spin room

Some candidates are opting to skip the spin room this time around. Jeb Bush wasn't out there, sending instead Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger to spin for him, who gamely posed when I said I was there to take some pictures.

Ben Carson and Rand Paul are working the media, while Ted Cruz is live on Megyn Kelly's show as a huge crowd gathers behind the stage waiting for a piece of him.
