'I'm really sorry, mate. Can I get anything for you?'

Australian tennis player John Millman has been praised after he selflessly rushed over to his opponent to offer comfort after he was forced to retire due to severe cramping.

As the temperature soared over 30 degrees for the second day of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday, Argentinian Diego Schwartzman began to struggle with whole-body cramps, eventually collapsing on the court.

Millman crossed the court, repeatedly apologised to Schwartzman and asked if he could get him 'some salt tablets,' as he was attended to by medical staff.

The young Australian tennis player continued his selfless behaviour by handing out cold drinks from the court's fridge to overheated members of the crowd.

Speaking to a 7News reporter following the match, the 26-year-old from Brisbane said: 'it is always unfortunate when your opponent has to go off like that.'

'Obviously the first thing is to be concerned for his health and they've got a great medical team, I'm sure they'll look after him well and I wish him a speedy recovery,' Millman said.

He admitted he 'didn't know what was happening,' when Schwartzman began to concede a few games, before being unable to stand up.

The Argentinian was stretchered off from court six to the Melbourne Park medical centre for further treatment, with Millman in tow offering further support,
