She won three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, after her self-titled debut album was released in 1993. Her second album, Secrets, was a huge success and gave us the hit “Un-Break My Heart.” She won two Grammy Awards for Secrets. She’s released four more studio albums, earning another Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” She dropped a duet album withBabyface in 2014, which earned them a Grammy Award in 2015.
2. Times weren’t always so easy for Toni.
She filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in 1998. Even though she had sold millions of records, she wasn’t yet receiving millions. She filed for bankruptcy again in 2010.
3. She has lupus.
Toni revealed she has lupus in 2010. It’s been a tough journey for her, and she fully admits that sometimes she has to lay in bed all day. “Some days I can’t balance it all. I just have to lay in bed,” she said on in 2015. “Pretty much when you have lupus you feel like you have the flu every day. But some days you get through it. But for me, if I’m not feeling well, I tend to tell my kids, ‘Oh mommy’s just going to relax in bed today. I kind of take it easy.”
Toni joined the seventh season of Dancing with the Stars. Her partner was Alec Mazo. They were voted off in the fifth week of competition. Her reality show, Braxton Family Values, began in 2011. The show follows the lives of the Braxton sisters — Toni, Tamar, Traci, Towanda and Trina. Toni’s a triple threat, too. Toni took on the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway in 1998. It was the first and only time a black woman played the leading role of Belle on Broadway.
Toni married musician Keri Lewis in 2001. That year, she gave birth to their first child,Denim Cole Braxton-Lewis. Toni got pregnant again in 2002. She suffered a complicated pregnancy and was confined to bed rest. Toni and Keri’s second son, Diezel Ky Braxton-Lewis was born in March 2003. Diezel was later diagnosed with autism. Toni and Keri divorced in 2013.
