TV Recap: Broad City, Series Premiere
I will not lie to you, dear readers. I went into my Broad City viewing feeling pretty confident that I would find it intensely hilarious, based solely on Amy Poehler’s executive producer credit.
I know Broad City is a pretty popular web series, though admittedly I have never seen it. I expected a seasoned show with a comedic rhythm completely down pat. I did not find that to be the case though. Broad City, the TV show, felt choppy and off to me. But I’m not actually surprised now that I’ve looked up the web series and seen that it’s only two minute episodes. Choppy, quick humor works really well in two-minute spurts, but doesn’t translate into a half hour comedy.
Listen, I have no doubt that Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer are two very talented and funny comediennes. The thing is – it’s always difficult to take short material and turn it into something meatier, especially if the source material is just an onslaught of punchlines. I can’t imagine two-minute episodes being much more than that.
I’d be interested to see if they do a better job of fleshing it out in the future. In the meantime, I actually think Broad City fits in perfectly with the Comedy Central lineup and it will probably thrive regardless. Comedy Central plays to a very different kind of comedy lover than I am, which happens.
Needless to say this show is not for me, but if you’re into Inside Amy Schumer and Kroll Showyou will probably appreciate it.
